Functional Skills E-Learning

In 2010, Navitas managed and delivered a £280,000 project on behalf of League Football Education (LFE) that has provided free online Functional Skills material to the entire education sector.

Delivered in partnership with Podium, SkillsActive, the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust, England Basketball, City and Guilds, Kineo and Sportiv8, the project addressed the very real need for Functional Skills material within the education sector by providing reusable e-learning resources for apprentices and learners aged 14-19 within traditional school and college programmes.

The groundbreaking project, funded by a Learning Innovation Grant from the Association of Learning Providers:

  • uses scenarios based around the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, focusing on what it takes for athletes to prepare for the great events
  • uses contributions from Olympic and Paralympic athletes to make the content authentic and engaging for learners. Athletes include 2x Olympic kayaker Anna Hemmings and Darren Harris a 3 x Judo Paralympian
  • is freely accessible to all schools and colleges in the UK and signposted via the “Get Set” website.
  • has an easy to use toolkit to allow the material to be used in a wide variety of settings. To demonstrate the ease of use of the toolkit, a football specific version of the content has also been developed for use by League Football Education AASE learners.

The project was officially awarded London 2012 Inspire Mark accreditation, enabling it to take advantage of the opportunities presented as a project officially inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The resources were also awarded a Bronze Award at the 2011 E-Learning Awards in the category “Excellence in the production of learning content – not for profit sector”.

"I worked with Navitas as part of the core project team on the ECC Functional Skills project and developed a strong working relationship with project manager Dave Roe. Dave was a highly effective project manager on what was a high profile and complex project. He ensured that the project met the needs and requirements of the wider steering group whilst ensuring that the core project team delivered within the defined timescales. Dave was adept at managing the relationships between the wide range of stakeholders and in sharing best practice and creating partnerships that will endure beyond this project. This includes the partnership between Sportiv8 and Navitas, with whom we hope to work on many similar projects in the future."
